Now residing with her husband, Joe, and their collection of dogs, cats, birds, and fish in Bothell, Washington, a suburb of Seattle, Else Josund Meek’s life journey began on a farm outside of Oslo, Norway, on April 3, 1953.
Like so many Europeans in the post-war years, her family chose to seek their dreams in the land of plenty and moved to Chicago, Illinois, several years later. The next decade or two found them moving often from the city to the suburbs, from Illinois to Missouri, back to Norway, and then to New York. Whether working in oils, inks, charcoals, glass, or mosaics, the one constant was Else’s increasing interest in art and its many forms.
Disenchanted with the lack of opportunities her chosen educational track for a teaching degree in art looked to offer, she left college and New York behind and took herself to a mountain community outside of Denver for a few years where the artistic aura of the late 60’s and early 70’s was alive and well.
Finally settling in the Seattle area 30 years ago, the following decades found artwork taking a back seat to the necessities of career and income. But as with all things we love at our core, creativity won out and has once again become the pursuit.
Although still enjoying multiple media to work in, Else’s main concentration these days is her work in polymer clay and the flexibility for expression and variation it brings. But, as her life has been an ever-changing journey, so has her art. Time will tell what roads will be next traveled – stay tuned!!
